Passive Eye

Website: www.passive-eye.com

Developed by Jerome Rush in collaboration with University College London, Passive Eye is a self-powered, always-on location sensor that survives by harvesting ambient radio frequency energy, converting solar radiation, and by generating power from movement. This is a radically new kind of product based on the emerging technologies of energy harvesting. There are no batteries and no need for servicing - truly a "fit and forget" product until recovered and re-used. Passive Eye is a complete, end-to-end system including the self-powered sensors, on-screen displays, maps and control software. Registered users have administrative control and can set any number of geo-fences and control all the available parameters of the system.

One of Reinier Mommaal's many projects, Waterlovt houseboats are designed and engineered in Holland, and built by a renowned world-class boat builder with an impeccable reputation. In Holland, living in a houseboat is not at all unusual: it's part of the Dutch heritage. The product designs have been progressively refined with Reinier's help to meet the very highest standards of domestic markets in the middle East - particularly in the Emirates along the Arabian Gulf coast. Water is in the Dutch DNA, because of their long connection with rivers, canals, lakes and the sea. This deep knowledge applied to houseboat design is now being offered in completely new markets, with new product challenges.

Established to design, specify, market and sell a range of static and dynamic mattresses; wound care systems; and ancillary equipment, for business-to-business customers in high dependency medical markets throughout Europe, Vigor Innovations was formed in 2012 to take advantage from over 35 years of pooled executive director knowledge. A strong manufacturing partnership was established with the world’s leading OEM/ODM mattress and medical device manufacturer: Caremed Supply Inc, in Taiwan. The company has a strong reputation as an important supplier of high quality medical equipment in UK and EU markets.

Distributed Management Systems Limited

Website: www.casque.co.uk

Following his early career in DEC, Basil Philipsz established Distributed Management Systems (DMS) as a software development business. His interest in cryptography and security systems evolved from a proprietary access security system that DMS installed at Dover Harbour, more than 20 years ago. Cyber Security is now a critical issue for nation states and businesses with Identity and Transaction assurance being crucial differentiators. DMS has developed CASQUE SNR, a mutual, multi-factor authentication system with active, secure Tokens that prevent phishing and to allow fully secure messaging via the internet. CASQUE SNR has been designed with assistance from CESG (UK Government's Technical Authority for Information Assurance) and is the only mutual authentication technology approved for use by Central Government at secret and above. Patents have been granted in the USA and EU for one of the four inventions underlying CASQUE SNR; the system is NATO approved, and is experiencing demand from both military and commercial markets.

Empire Cycles Limited

Website: www.empire-cycles.com

Chris Williams set out in 2010 to design and manufacture a new kind of mountain bike: structural components were to be either machined from solid aluminium or made as aluminium castings, rather than the more familiar welded tube and/or carbon fibre fabrications. The result is Empire Cycles, a new mountain bike brand, proudly British, with around 70% of the product value manufactured in the UK. Dick West helped Chris to establish the company in Bolton; to launch 3 entirely new generic products; to bypass the distributor/dealer sales channels and sell direct to mountain bike owners world-wide. Continuous product development and refinement is keeping the brand fresh, and is steadily reducing manufacturing costs. The company has developed a cult following among mountain bike enthusiasts and is regularly seen at Enduro mountain bike race meetings

CSA Photonics Limited

Website: www.csaphotonics.co.uk

Both Basil Philipsz and Dick West are committee members at Ideas North West (see www.ideasnorthwest.co.uk), a "members' club" for inventors in North West England that Basil Philipsz help found and develop. Martin Watson has a career in the management of street lighting for local authorities and is a fellow member of Ideas North West. With help from Basil, Martin "took the plunge" - he resigned from his job with a local Council; produced his first energy-saving LED retrofit unit for illuminated Street Signs and Bollards and launched the company. Basil provided the marketing and sales support, while Martin perfected the innovative design of products. Since the start of trading in 2010, the company has achieved sales growth with long-term contracts to replace "conventional" lighting in streets, housing units; motorways and offices with energy-efficient LEDs.
